Beyond the Performance.
Honest conversations about life in music, the challenges we face, and the stories beyond the stage.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Meet the Host
Hi, I'm Jack Phillips.
I'm a former trumpet player and graduate of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where music was at the centre of pretty much everything I did.
For years, I imagined a future performing professionally. But when difficulties with my playing changed that path, I found myself questioning not just my career, but a huge part of my identity.
That experience made me realise how many stories exist beyond what we see on stage — stories about pressure, setbacks, ambition, uncertainty and finding a way forward.
I started The Sound Check to create a space for those conversations. Somewhere performers can speak openly about their experiences, the challenges they've faced and the journeys they're still figuring out.
Because sometimes the most important stories aren't the ones we tell through music.
